Landfill leachate processing
Engineered landfills face an ongoing challenge with the disposal of leachate. Syngineering’s advanced systems can save your facility money by processing leachate onsite.
Technology to manage your leachate levels in landfill
Operators of modern engineered landfills face an ongoing challenge with the disposal of leachate. It represents both a substantial cost and an operational risk if your business does not have effective leachate management and disposal strategies in place.
Storing leachate in ponds may offer a temporary solution, yet all too frequently, severe weather events can lead to ponds being filled to their capacity. In some cases leachate will need to be tankered offsite, resulting in considerable transport costs for your business in addition to the processing fees.
Syngineering can use advanced VMT or Vibrating Membrane Technology to process your leachate onsite and save your landfill facility considerable costs.
Managing leachate levels to maximise landfill gas
Landfill gas is an important revenue stream for landfill operators. Yet when your landfill becomes too dry, waste will not rot fast enough to produce enough gas. And when your landfill is flooded, there won’t be enough gas produced to fire your generators.
The solution is to actively manage your water levels by pumping excess water out – which leads to the problem of how to dispose of this leachate. It can become a difficult waste water treatment problem as the leachate cannot simply be discharged as it is full of heavy metals, ammonia, salts and other toxic chemicals.
Syngineering utilises Vibrating Membrane Technology (VMT) to treat landfill leachate and remove harmful waste products. The resulting filtered water is so clean, it is rated better than potable or drinking standard water.
How treating leachate onsite can save costs
Even if your landfill is located close to a sewer – and if your local utility company accepts leachate as trade waste – this is still a significant cost to your business. Waste water can cost up to $100 per kilolitre to process through the municipal waste system. There may also be limits to what can be discharged into the sewer, depending on the age of the landfill and the nature of the waste being received.
Syngineering’s advanced systems can save your facility money by processing leachate onsite. Importantly, the resulting water is actually far better quality than potable – which means your facility’s discharge will meet EPA requirements and can readily be pumped into waterways without issue.
You may also choose to use the recycled water for dust suppression at your landfill, solving yet another operational challenge with one clever solution.
Reducing complaints from landfill odours
A further benefit of onsite VMT membrane processing is a reduction in odours from the landfill facility. When leachate is processed immediately, there is far less chance of odours being created.
